Shape Recognition

I am always looking for ways to teach and occupy my two year old while I homeschool my older two girls. My focus with him lately has been recognizing shapes and colors. I have some flash cards with shapes and colors and he does really well with them. So I decided to try something new and it was a big hit with my little guy!

First I used painter’s tape to make the shapes from the flash cards on the floor.

Then I gave my little guy the cards mixed up on the floor and asked him to match the shapes.

He did so well and had lots of fun.

When he was all done he was so proud of himself!

I loved it because after once through with me he kept redoing it alone πŸ™‚ It gave me time to work with the girls on reading. Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I love the shape recognition idea. I think that would work on older children too, perhaps add something extra like colour etc.
    Thanks for the great idea!

  2. If you’ve still got the tape on the floor, the next step could be pulling together a collection of household items that are one of the shapes (ball, block, etc) , and having him sort THOSE onto the tape shapes. Might be a little more challenging if he’s ready for it!

  3. love this idea, I have a busy three year old, and am always looking for things to keep her busy while homeschooling my 14 year old! Thanks, Paige – Georgia
