This whole last week has been volcano week in our house! That is what our science has been about and my kids are loving it 🙂 We went to the library for books and DVDs about volcanoes, built and set off volcano models, played with food volcanoes, and tons of facts about volcanoes have been learned. I must say, volcano week has been a huge hit at the Spaulding house! I even did 16 more models with my art class today.
Here is our volcano model building, painting, and erupting process in pictures:
I let the kids use toilet paper rolls with about 1/3 cut off the top.
Then I taped them down to plastic plates.
We used rolled paper around the toilet paper tubes to form the mountains.
This was Belle rolling paper 🙂
Then we used homemade clay (recipe here)
Here are the final volcanoes. We let them dry overnight, then painted.
Painting…
Then after dried, I put 2 teaspoons of baking soda in them with a funnel. I also added a drop of dawn dish soap for extra bubbles.
I put some vinegar in cups and added a few drops of red food coloring in each so it looks more like lava.
The kids LOVED setting them off!
Well thanks for stopping by and checking out our volcano fun!
Johanna 🙂
Fun! My kindergartener has been into volcanoes since I can remember and lately has been wanting to make one. These look like an easy project for us!
