Linen Storage Solutions

I have my linens stored in some big beautiful old wooden drawers set into the hall of our home. I love having them there but the old wooden drawers smell just that old and wooden. I go to great lengths to have my laundry smell fresh and clean. I even use an in-wash scent booster that makes my laundry smell great out of the dryer. I fold my sheets and then put them into the drawer for that size sheet, even just a week later I pull them out to put on the bed and they smell like a musty old wooden drawer. Not wanting to change where I store them I began trying to find a solution. I tried scrubbing out the drawers with cleaner, no change.

Then I had a great idea, use my in-wash scent booster which has a smell I love to combat the drawer smell. I got small mesh bags at my local dollar tree (6 for $1) and put about a tablespoon of the small beads in them and put the bags in the wooden drawers with my sheets.

Now my sheets smell like they are fresh from the dryer whenever I get them out! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  1. Great idea! My hall linen closet does the same thing. I’ve tried baking soda and some other things but it just doesn’t do the trick. Question: What brand of scent booster do you use? I don’t know that I’ve used one that come in little beads…Thx!

  2. Good idea. We do what my grandma always did – put sprigs of dried lavender between the sheets when they’re in the drawers – the sheets smell fresh and the smell of lavender helps us wind down and sleep at the end of the day.

  3. where do you get the small beads; what are they made of. I have purchased ceramic birds with a mesh scented bag inside them at Michaels do you know what media is in the bags, it looks like small puffed rice?

  4. How long does the scent last? I’m always on the look out for scents that are lasting!

  5. I’ve never seen anything resembling these drawstring bags at a Dollar store, at least not around our area. I can picture them being at Walmart, or Joanne’s or maybe Michael’s or A.C. Moore, so I’ll add them to my list. I’ve been wondering what those beads were used for when I saw them in the laundry supplies aisle. Gosh, I bet a container of them would last forever and have a lot of uses. Thanks for sharing this idea.

I started pulling everything out of my linen closet today and put some towels, etc. in the washer on a short cycle, and added liquid Down to rinse cycle. Did several loads fine, no problem but the small towels, wash cloths, and 4 standard size pillow cases, I think my washer has given up the ghost. I had planned to replace it with income tax refund(hoping we get some back and don’t owe). Will be calling a repair person first thing tomorrow.

Ever had days or weeks where everything went wrong? We lost Audio on tv Friday afternoon; Comcast came this morning and their box had gone bad, so they bought us a replacement and we are back in working order. Top rack brackets in dishwasher broke and it cost too much to replace so I’m washing glasses and cups by hand and using the top rack for a drainboard, with towel underneath it to catch any water. Hey, back to the old days!

  7. I’v always just used dryer sheets this is a good idea too. If you can’t find a mesh bag an old sock will do.

  9. I LOVE Dollar Tree!!!!! The mesh bags are in the aisle with wedding supplies (not everyone may know this). Every week they have something new so I do stop in weekly, cause you never know what you’re going to find.
Also, I use the Purex wash scent booster. it’s cheaper and works just as good!

  10. That’s an awesome idea! You may want to consider painting, or putting polyurethane on the drawers, let them dry good and put the smell goods in there! Thanks for the great idea!

  11. I owned a custom cabinet shop. I would take old chest of drawers, decorate them, & resale them. They were very popular with the Interior Designers in our area. I would have the old drawers sprayed with clear Polyurethane. Smell gone
