DIY Sweetened Condensed Milk

Key lime pie is one of my husband’s favorite desserts. Last night I went to make him one to thank him for doing something for me and I only had one can of sweetened condensed milk and my recipe calls for two. Not wanting to head to the store at 10 p.m. I decided to do some research and make my own! Now that I have made it at home fresh, I must admit it was just as good or better! I probably will never buy canned again, it was so simple and fast. Best part, no preservatives!

Ingredients:

1 cup powdered milk
2/3 cup sugar
3 Tablespoons melted butter
1/3 cup boiling water

Placed all of the ingredients in a blender, food processor, or in my case I used my magic bullet mini blender. Blend well for about two minutes, until smooth. That’s it! Super easy and tastes amazing πŸ™‚

Here it is pouring into my mixing bowl last night to make the key lime pie. As you can see it is very thick just like sweetened condensed milk. It ran a bit quicker from how warm it was because of the boiling water though. If you aren’t using this immediately keep refrigerated, I think it would thicken more when chilled.

So it tastes better, easy/fast to make, cheaper and no preservatives! Yep this recipe is a keeper in our house πŸ™‚ thanks for stopping by!

  1. This is great! Thanks, I use to have this recipe years ago from my mom. Quick story……. I had made something that required sweetened condensed milk and for some reason I hadn’t boiled the water (I think I didn’t write the recipe down correctly). My mom said you have to bring it to a boil and I replied that I didn’t. I just mixed it without even heating the water. The desert turned out absolutely fine! It was a no bake refrigerated desert. I had made it this way several times. Don’t know why it worked either way……..just an interesting tid bit! So glad to have the recipe again thanks!
