Happy Earth Day! I use this day to teach our children about taking care of the earth God entrusted to us in the beginning. We read the creation story, plant seeds, play outside, work in the yard, plant a tree and do fun crafts repurposing items. Today we made Earth Day cookies as well! I was inspired by some cupcakes I saw on Pinterest.
Ingredients:
Sugar Cookie dough
Food coloring
Red hard candy
First we crushed our red hard candies. I unwrapped them and put them in a zipper bag and used a kitchen mallet to crush them.
Then I colored 2/3 of the cookie dough with blue food coloring, and 1/3 with green food coloring.
Then I rolled out 5 skinny long ropes of blue cookie dough and 3 green. I placed them every other on the counter.
Next I gently rolled all of the ropes together into one thick roll. Don’t roll too much or it will all just blend together.
Wrap the large roll in plastic wrap. Then refrigerate for about an hour.
Remove from the fridge and slice the roll in 1/2-3/4 inch slices. Gently press into a circle shape.
Use the heart cookie cutter to cut a heart from the center.
Separate and place on a cookie sheet. I used a silicone baking mat since the candies come off of it easier.
Then fill the centers with the crushed candies.
Bake at 375 until the centers are melted and the sugar cookies are done. About 10 minutes.
We had lots of fun making these! They didn’t turn out quite like I imagined, but if you use a homemade dough made a bit stiffer with extra flour it might hold the shape of the heart more. Thanks for stopping by š
