Apple Pie In A Jar

With a surplus of apples recently, My family has been enjoying many comfort foods such as apple pie. Wanting to save some for later pies I made some apple pie filling in my crock pot and canned it. Oh, and I made one to enjoy now as well with the filling.

Crockpot Apple Pie Filling Ingredients:

25 small apples peeled and cut into small chunks
2 cups sugar
2 Tablespoons of ground cinnamon

Place the apples in the crockpot.

Then measure in the sugar and cinnamon and stir.

I put my crockpot on high for two hours and stirred every 30 minutes or so. Then I turned it off and let it cool. The apple pie filling is ready to be canned or used immediately in a pie. This recipe makes about two apple pies worth of filling.

Pie Crust Ingredients:

2 2/3 Cups Flour
1 Teaspoon Salt
2 Cups Crisco
3 Tablespoons Ice cold water

Whisk the flour and salt together in a bowl and then use a pastry cutter to cut the crisco into the flour mixture. The texture you are looking for looks like this.

Then add in the cold water slowly until it comes together into a ball like this.

Chill this ball in the refrigerator wrapped in plastic wrap for an hour or two. Then roll out half of the pie dough and put it in the bottom of your greased pie pan. I roll mine around the rolling pin to make an easier transition into the pan.

Trim the edges of the crust to fit the pan.

Bake this bottom crust at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

While the bottom is baking roll out the other half of the dough for the top. I traced the top of my pan on a piece of paper before using it and cut it out. I placed my paper on the rolled out dough and cut the top out. Then I used a small apple cookie cutter to cut out apple shapes as vents for the pie and placed the cut outs around the pie top.

When the base is baked pour in your pie filling.

Place the top on and brush with egg whites to get a nice shine on the finished pie.

Bake this at 350 degrees for 15-20 min until the top crust is browned and done.

  1. Just wondering – if you’re not going to use it right away, can it be stored in a jar in the refrigerater ? And for how long? 🙂 Looks yummy! Can’t wait to try it!!

  2. Have you tried canning this? If so would you just dump it in a jar and process it? I have a pressure canner and a hot water bath. How long would you say? Just wondering if it would be too mushy cooked in the crock pot, pressure canned, then baked again. Thanks!
